Mifepristone may be administered by or under the supervision of a gynecologist, able to assess the gestational age of an embryo and to diagnose ectopic pregnancies. The gynecologist must also be able to provide surgical intervention in cases of incomplete abortion or severe bleeding, or have made plans to provide such care through others, and be able to assure the patient access to medical facilities equipped to provide blood transfusions and resuscitation, if necessary. You should not use it if you have allergy problems with the elements of this medicine. This medicine may have interactions while using it in the blend of other medicines so it is better to share your medical record with your doctor. You should also tell him about the medicine that you have used earlier. |

Mifepristone acts as an anti-hormone drug that helps to stop the effects of progesterone. It is used for the therapeutic execution of pregnancy. Mifepristone is used to end a pregnancy that is less than 49 days in duration. It works by stopping the supply of hormones that maintains the interior of the uterus. Without these hormones, the uterus cannot support the pregnancy and the contents of the uterus are expelled. Mifepristone is also used to control high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) in patients with Cushing's syndrome who also have type 2 diabetes and have failed surgery or are not candidates for surgery. For purposes of this treatment, pregnancy is dated from the first day of the last menstrual period in a presumed 28 days cycle with ovulation occurring at mid-cycle. It is advisable to go for a clinical examination to know the duration of pregnancy, this may be determined from menstrual history as well. Medical abortions can be done through 9 weeks of pregnancy. Up to 7 weeks, the combination of mifepristone (orally) and misoprostol (Vaginaly) is about 92% effective. As the length of pregnancy increases, the effectiveness of mifepristone and misoprostol decreases slightly. Within 4 hours of taking the second medicine (misoprostol), many women have vaginal bleeding and cramping, and the pregnancy is terminated. Most pregnancies end within the first 24 hours after the misoprostol dose. If not, then typically a second dose of misoprostol is given. Misoprostol can be given orally, buccally (dissolved between the gums and cheek), or vaginally. Misoprostol is slightly more effective when given vaginally than when taken by mouth. But many doctors are only giving misoprostol by mouth because of reports of a rare, fatal infection that affected a few women after using vaginal misoprostol. Some studies have shown that taking misoprostol buccally works as well as when it is given vaginally or orally.
