Permethrin is an over-the-counter medication which comes under the group of scabicides and pediculicides. This medication is used for the treatment of Lice in adults and children of 2 months and above. Lice are the small insects that get attached themselves on the skin of the skin of the head (scalp). This medication belongs to a synthetic class called Pyrothroids and it is used as an insect repellent. One of the advantages of using this medication is it is less toxic for human body. This medication is included in the ‘world health organization’s list of essential medicines’ that is needed in the basic health system.

Mechanism of action of Permethrin:

This medication works by the following mechanisms:

  • This medication acts on the nerve cell membrane and destroy the sodium channel and it interfere the functions of neurons. This causes spasm of the muscles and paralysis which in turn causes death.
  • Permathrin is best effective by ingestion and contact.
  • It also acts as mild repellent.

Indications of Permethrin Cream:

Permethrin cream is used in the following purposes:

  • This medication is used for the management of scabies in adult and in the children from the age of 2 months.
  • Other uses:
    • Insect repellent
    • Protective measures like cloth impregnant and mosquito net
    • As insecticides
    • To protect crops in agricultures
    • Domestic or industrial insect control

Contraindications of Permetrin cream:

This medication is contraindicated in the patients who are hypersensitive to any ingredient medication.

Method of applying Permethrin Cream:

Always use this medication as per the instructions of your physician. However, you can follow the steps mentioned below while using this cream:

  • Apply a thin layer of the medication all over the skin from neck to toes. You should be careful while applying this medication in the skin folds, between the fingers and around the waist and buttocks.
  • After application, leave it on your skin for 8-14 hours.
  • After 8-14 hours, wash the cream by showering or bathing.
  • If your skin becomes itchy after using this medication, do not worry because it is normal.
  • In case, if you notice live mice for 14 days or more, you need to repeat the application.

Dosages of this medication are as following:

 For the management of scabies:

  • For adults and children of two months: This medication should be applied to the complete body from head to toe. After application, leave it for 8-14 hours. Then wash off by having shower or bath.

For the management of head lice:

  • After shampooing, apply the medication on the scalp, neck and to the hair. Leave for 10 minutes and then rinse with water. Avoid to applying around the area of the eyes.
