What is Zyrtec?


Zyrtec is a drug that belongs to the class of antihistamine. The main component of this drug is cetirizine. Zyrtec is mainly used for the treatment of cold and allergic reactions. This medication works by stopping the release of the natural chemical substances in the brain, particularly histamine. When your immune system is poor, the natural chemical histamines are formed in the body, react with the allergens and produce the symptoms like runny nose, itching or infection of the skin, watery eyes etc. This medication is also used for the management of itching and swelling occurs in urticarial.

How does Zyrtec work?

The exact function of Zyrtec is still not known.But it is thought that this medication work by pausing the secretion of histamine in the brain.It occurs by the competition between cetrizine and free histamines for binding with receptors (HA). Therefore, it decreases the affinity of natural chemical histamines of binding with of HA receptors. So when the allergens attack you, they cannot reacts to them. Thus it reduces the symptoms associated with allergy.

What are the indications of Zyrtec?

  • In allergic reactions like runny nose, itching, watery eyes or sneezing.
  • For the treatment of cold.
  • In urticaria.

What are the contraindications of Zyrtec?

  • This medication is not used if the patient is allergic to any component of the preparation.
  • If the patient is hepatic or liver diseases like liver failure or liver cirrhosis, consult with your doctor before taking this medication.
  • If you are suffering from any kidney disorder, talk to your doctor before using Zyrtec.

How should you store this medication?

What happens if you miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it, but not near the time of next dose. If you recall it near the time of next dose, skin the missed dose. Never take a double dose.
